What is Card Grading?

What is Card Grading?
Card grading is the process of submitting a trading card—whether it's a sports card, TCG (trading card game), or gaming card—to a professional third-party grading company. These companies authenticate the card and, more importantly, assign it a grade based on its condition. Grading is typically done using a 10-point scale.

Once graded, the card is encapsulated in a tamper-proof, hard plastic case, protecting it from dirt, dust, and other damage. This ensures the card remains in the same condition after encapsulation.

The Major Grading Companies
While there are many grading companies, three dominate the industry:

Each of these companies has its own reputation, pricing structure, and turnaround times for returning graded cards. Perception of these companies can vary depending on who you ask, but they are widely recognized as the most trusted in the industry.

Does Grading Increase a Card’s Value?
In most cases, grading a card increases its value, but this is not guaranteed. The final grade, market demand, and other factors all play a role in determining value.
